What is Andaliman Pepper?
Andaliman Pepper, Zanthoxylum acanthopodium belongs to the plant's family of the Rutaceae family, which is also called the citrus family. It is the berries of an evergreen shrub that grows wild in the northern plateaus of Sumatra. It is also a pepper rarity and a close relative of the Sichuan pepper.
Where does the Andaliman pepper come from?
Andaliman pepper is rare. Up to this day, it grows exclusively wild just like the Voatsperifery, Tasmanian, Assam or red Kampot Pepper. Even the harvest is difficult. Since it grows wild in the plateaus of Sumatra, residents harvest it. They collect the aromatic pepper in reed baskets and dry it under the Indonesian sun. Doing so loses a large part of its weight, which reduces the harvest and makes the product even more expensive. After laborious collection and drying, only 10% of the original harvest weight remains. That means that it loses 90% of its weight before it is ready for packing. For this reason, the Andaliman pepper is very expensive and a rare pepper.
